It’s time for a completely-unrelated-to-the-neat-picture-posted-above thread!
I’ve been listening to podcasts for about 8 years I think. Couple that with the enjoyment of meandering around the cities I travel to for hours on end and I’ve probably listened to thousands of hours of (mostly) good content by now.
My problem?
I can’t find any more good podcasts.
I know I like to blame Al Gore’s Rhythms for the downfall of humanity, but in this case, it’s the downfall of my earical enjoyment.
Anybody got some good recommendations for podcasts out there?
P.S. I might also do a big compilation of all the good ones afterward, let me know if you’d like credit!
P.P.S. Not like real credit. Non-monetary fake credit. The kind that rules our ‘enlightened’ internet age where a shoutout means more to society than a roof over everyone’s head.
P.P.P.S. I’m not sure if using multiple P’s in “postscript” is still following the original intention of P.S.
P.P.P.P.S. Apparently, “postscript” comes from the Latin word “postscriptum.”
P.P.P.P.P.S. I may have had too many coffees today. ☕☕☕
P.P.P.P.P.P.S. Apparently, this is what an italicized coffee emoji looks like ☕☕☕
The Consciousness Explorers. A continuation of an organic grass root started in Toronto. Look at the topic and rating. Not the Quintessential Jeffrey Warrren from cal, but a good option.
After your script, I can't genuinely suggest one podcast one should follow. I have more podcasts subscriptions that I am listening in a pendulum mode. Generally, things I am curious how they work ( there are some great science, defunct but available still ). Then others on really that are ADHD impulse based initial subscription, that sound good at the time and can go two ways. I keep listening, inconsistently, at the ones that give me some value, or they get unsubscribed if there's too much balast or fluff . I embrace the ones that are giving my biased perspective a new one.
I noticed that there is one, related to mindfulness without the new age woo woo that I intentionally go to because I find something useful for my personal well-being. Sometimes are obvious things that I don't pay attention. It's called 10% happier . ( There's a book too, it's a funny way how that come to be - search it)
So go and commit to listening to what you fancy, and unload the ones that you find that are of no value to you (maybe my palaeontology ones or Bill Burrs (occasional) rants) .
Just build a library, and you control when and what and when to listen.
PS. Ignore the commercials if you like the show . I just stretch , remind myself to breathe and ignore them. Or , if you really can, there are "bulk" subscriptions.
Like this one ( that's a collection of decent ones)
Awesome, I'll check out that last one in a bit when I go for a walk. I wonder if the "10% happier" podcast is similar to "The Happiness Lab" by Dr Laurie Santos, who lectures on the subject. I'd recommend the first season of that one if it's in your wheelhouse. Cheers Ovi
Not necessarily. That one is narrow and is basically a spin on positive psychology. " The good life". May be fitting for what you're doing. In honesty, I don't like the salesman ( he was a famous TV anchor) Dan Harris. The book gas valu because of his co-writer, Jeffrey Warren ( from Toronto!!). He is the real deal. He has a 10 min daily applicable irreverent take on the why ( very irreverently witty and at the same time same time well structured and full of many real life observations of humans stumbling quest for "well-being". He was co-opted and now is exclusively available on Calm app or at calm.com. I got a paid lifetime subscription just because of him. If you send me an email, I can , as a lifetime subscriber, give a 30 day app test. You can plow on his other irreverential but utterly valid and helpful things. "How to meditate " , structured as 30 short lessons is a must.
For a more philosophical and intellectual take, go for Sam Harris, Waking up.
But Jeff Warren is my daily fix in his "Daily Trip" on Calm.
JJ, if you are looking for short, quick hits of inspiration and science-based ideas about living well in the moment...check out Polly Campbell, Simply Said. I'm really proud of what we are doing here. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/polly-campbell-simply-said/id1458777943 Meanwhile I'm going to check out some of the other recs here.
The BBC Sounds app has a great selection ranging from categories like 'Get Lost in a Story' to 'Stay in the Know', True Crime, Life Stores, History, Science, Comedy, Sport. I also enjoy listening to Dr Chatterjee's Feel Better Live More. Happy listening, JJ.
Been listening to Making Sense for half a year now, great show, almost always an interesting perspective or conversation, even when I don't agree. I went and listened to some of his super old podcasts, he's really come a long way lol. Is Lex Fridman in a similar light? Haven't heard of that podcast yet
It's great, most of my friends here always talk about it, my only issue is my attention span seems to be limited to 1 hour episodes so I struggle to get into a lot of his stuff, most are like 3+ hours right? Maybe I didn't give it a fair shot, only tried it a couple times
Ooo neuroscience, sign me up! How is the last one you mentioned? I wonder if it's similar to 'Shopify Masters', a show I spent far far too many hours listening to before I jumped into the online world (it's good but so much hit and miss)
I'm not that familiar with shopify masters, but from the outside, it definitely looks similar. And this one's hit or miss as well. And often a little long. But still useful.

Just signed up for Jeffrey's newsletter, I'll see if it's for me, thanks for the recommendation

Never heard of that app, is it paid? Right now I mainly use Spotify and the apple podcast native app, even though its layout is terrible haha
No, it’s free. British Broadcasting Corporation - although nobody ever calls it that. Just BBC. You should find it in the Apple App Store.
Thanks Rosy

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is great! I always thought I didn't like history, until I started listening to Dan :)

Yeah, they're basically audiobooks :)
