For me this was fascinating to understand the thread of “how did we get here” and the true whys along the way rather than just repeating what the old wives tales are, or maybe just knowing part of the story. Also helpful to see the global perspective.
I think many people are looking for better qualities of life and understanding the back stories may make it easier to take a step forward. For example, why in the world did we settle for 5-day workweek instead of negotiating for 4? And why hasn’t it changed (mostly) for more than a century?
Write what you care about and the rest of us will come along for the ride :)
Maybe snarky (on brand) but this is the most comprehensive deep dive into this ridiculous “we’ve always done it this way” ritual I’ve ever ever read. Hopefully some American monkeys who aren’t afraid of water will actually do something about it.
It would be nice to get rid of as many useless old traditions as possible! Also, yea, I went kind of overboard with this one but it was a fun deep dive to do, I wonder if you (and other readers) would like to see more random ones like this?
We are not "saving" daylight. We still get the exact same amount of daylight. We just punish morning people .
They are talking about making the hour ahead the "standard" time, which goes against human biology. Just one more thing politicians have screwed up. In my province, they did a poll about switching but didn't have an option for staying on standard time so of course DST won.
I'm shocked to discover half of Australia no longer uses it! I quite like it when the clocks go forward as that means an extra hour in bed. Not so much when they go back. And it takes an age to get used to calling the UK from NZ at a covenient time again.
I think its the opposite for the extra sleep time if I'm not mistaken. Been a long time since I've had to change my clock for that though (other than 12 hours whenever I fly back home haha).
Very patient of you to delve into all these points! And thanks for the world map! In the USA Florida's Marco Rubio wants to see the Sunshine Protection Act of 2023 passed . . . making daylight savings time permanent. As posted by CNBC: The bill was introduced by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in 2021, passed the Senate and died in the House. Rubio is reintroducing the act because he believes the act can “reduce crime, encourage kids to play outside and lower the risk of heart attacks and car accidents,” according to NBC News.
I'd like to see solar noon to be REAL solar noon.... not an hour later during daylight savings time like it is now. How about we cancel daylight saving time all together, and instead handle according to the needs and wants of the area.... like go to work an hour earlier.
Yea I saw a bunch of state bills (400+!) that were introduced since last year when the senate or house (can't remember) proposed to get rid of it or keep it permanent. Nice to see some are still trying to change it. If I'm not mistaken, Canada and Mexico responded by doing the same thing and it looks like Mexico actually went through with it haha (haven't looked it up though). Also, I really agree with this "I'd like to see solar noon to be REAL solar noon". That's what it is here where I live, it's nice!

Thanks Jen, old habits die hard, especially societal ones it seems.

And PS. Thanks for the support!

Yea it's strange, why not just go back to the natural clock, I'm sure our bodies would be more thankful in the long run.
