I know not all of you are writers. Hell, most days I don’t even consider myself one. But that doesn’t stop me from trying to be one. Or at least what can pass for a writer on the internet these days.
Part of that journey of improvement has led me to tinker, research, and practice a hell of a lot different subjects over the past 20 months or so.
In my publication on Medium, which I cheekily (or lazily) called Feedium, I’ve shared at least 200 posts about improving on the platform. Some of them weren’t the greatest, but it seems a lot of people appreciate the advice and perhaps unique humor I present on the subject.
But at the end of the day, there’s three main reasons that keep me sharing my thoughts and learnings on writing.
It always feels great to help someone else improve
It gives me a chance to be more ‘free’ with my writing (see my poor attempts at humor)
It makes me a couple coffees a month
So today I wanted to share one of the few secrets I’ve come across while on this journey. One that not a lot of the big competitors talk about.
After all, there’s a reason why some of them charge an absurd $700 to teach you about how to earn $50 a month. I assume (because I would never pay for such a thing) that in these courses they share secrets which they normally wouldn’t.
Ones like how every viral article can only become viral if there’s at least some controversy contained in the piece. Or how output does actually matter, despite some of them saying you can write one piece a year and still make millions of pennies.
I’ve been pretty open with most of my experiments on the platform. But not all of them. I didn’t often share the failures.
Nor the times when I wasted literally days going down a rabbit hole only to get stuck with the realization I probably could’ve spent that time doing anything more productive, like seeing the sun or talking to a human or bathing.
But I digress.
Today, I wanted to share with you one of these important secrets. It’s how we in the field need to refocus our marketing efforts if you truly wish to be successful and live to fight another day.
So, if you’re curious at all about how to submit and see positive results, please enjoy this quick 3-minute secret I discovered.
And please don’t kill me after.
Thanks!

Any comment, like, or share goes a long way to helping me in my long journey. Thanks to anyone that takes the time to do it!
I loved this piece, JJ. Honest, open and to the point. If writers want to make a decent living, they have to write content that readers enjoy and want to read. That's it. Impressing editors is all part of that journey and I have found the editors that I have come across on Medium very helpful and supportive and I feel that my writing has improved with their guidance and help.
